- Nourish the Team’s Soil for Soaring
Janet M. Harvey, CEO inviteCHANGE ICF Master Certified Coach Accredited Coaching Supervisor, Coaching Supervision Academy Certified Mentor Coach, inviteCHANGE & ICF Team coaching is potent process through which teams remember, restore and sustain their collective wisdom and strengths to deliver on the shared team purpose. Teams and the organisations they contribute to are all too often seduced by the task of things and our well-worn habits to react to daily requests and forget to focus on the day to day experience of teaming. Teaming allows everyone to share the burden, seek and gain understanding for the work they are authored to produce and enthusiastically accept responsibility for and of being together. Teaming agreements are an essential component of a team’s success. By missing this vital consideration teams often fall into politics and drama and get stuck. The burden of stretch goals and accelerated timelines causes team members to lose sight of the brilliance of their team colleagues. We must see our team members as more than the moment we are in. When we ask instead, how is the climate that has been created contributing to the inability for a team member to show up, we are attending to both the emotional and belonging needs for the individual. This is an important leader role and, in the case of an autonomous team, is a role for each team member to embody. Sadly, this is rarely explored let alone adopted in most workplace teams. Creating the climate for people to shine is every leader’s job. Since every person is at least a leader of self, then it is every team member’s job to nourish the soil of the team to produce healthy, vibrant results. When engaged as a team coach, one of the most important elements to discover is what is in the “collective field” of a team, perhaps keeping its team members from full authorship for the process and the outcomes produced. Team members are rarely asked or get to declare how they wish to contribute and what their value is to the team’s endeavour. Being voluntold is so common, members often arrive to a new initiative with a certain sceptic perspective and emotional insecurity. It is palpable when you enter a team or group of people. Anxiety is high. It is very important for us as team coaches not to solidify this protection and amp anxiety by the creation of “ground rules” but rather we need to work to create teaming agreements. Given that attention given to the relationships and ways of interacting to create emotional health and sense of belonging are often short-changed, it is important to find a comfortable way to begin. We use a process at InviteChange when working with teams called Team Sovereignty. The framework is a set of four seemingly simple questions: 1. What brought you here? 2. What is the team expected to deliver? 3. What agreements are necessary for you to accept responsibility? 4. How would you like to approach delivering the expectation while honouring the agreements made between us? Notice that the agreements for teaming is the third and not the first question. It is important that each team member experience being seen and heard for their role and wanted contribution. That this is a shared dialogue in the team setting accelerates building credibility with each other and sets up a discussion about shared purpose and how each person most matters in the fulfilment of the purpose. These two questions provide the fertilizer for the soil to bind well with the seeds of that will become the crop to harvest at the end. The soil itself is then the teaming agreements, the specific behaviors that each team member chooses to adopt, encourage in each other, notice when absent and invite in and, adapt with additional behaviors when flow in the team is disrupted. Keep in mind that this is a skill and a mindset change for most people because focusing on the way of relating has had a backseat view to the front seat view of task and information. Patience is important and allowing time for full exploration will be the reason a team is able to accelerate quickly as circumstances change and course correction is needed. Team agreements are the basis for meaning and that is what strengthens resilience, the ability to cope with circumstances outside of the team’s control. One final note here; teaming agreements are dynamic and in the collective field inside and outside of live meeting time together. The behaviors are the social norms that define the climate for the team, nourish the bond and sustain trust.
- COVID-19 to No-vid ♾ (Infinity )
Co-Rona to Coro-Na: The shift in consciousness #Covid19 is the biggest challenge leaders face today. How we handle this challenge will decide our legacy . We have a choice to script the right legacy. As Viktor Frankl said, ‘if we chase happiness, we may not get it’. Hence what we do for the collective good, will decide the legacy. While the #lockdown has redefined ‘ Uncertainty ’ in #VUCA, the future looks uncertain for almost all. While we take all the precautions prescribed by the government, medical fraternity for the common good, it helps to stay focussed on the larger goals of life, at a holistic level. Health, Family/Relationships, Spirituality, Hobbies are all back in focus, thanks to the lockdown. As many world leaders have reminded us, this is a big challenge, but also an opportunity. An opportunity to go within. If we do not come out of this #lockdown stronger at all levels, physical, through exercises, yoga, or any other activity of your interest mental, resilient and fearless emotional, heal the relationships that have gone off the track during your pursuit of professional success, and spiritual, with deeper self-awareness, faith over fear, #I2We2He, else… we are just lazy?! As we enter the 4th week of lockdown in India, time to move from co-rona ( together-cry) to coro-na (coro-no), roha & na being in Hindi. We have been discussing among friends, clients/coachees, fellow coaches & healers, and leaders… How are you spending time during the #lockdown, courtesy #covid19? Few things I have been doing: Was blessed with the opportunity to co-present a webinar on #Healing, hosted by ICF Bengaluru Charter Chapter. We also launched our global online webinar for leaders & coaches, on “ICF Team Coaching” with Janet Harvey. Have been part of a spiritual group, to join their chanting every evening at 10 PM. Then some prayer, healing. Have passionately stayed with my morning routine. Satsang with Sunder Iyer: Join the Satsang, mostly recorded, Satsang with Sunder, on Sri Hanuman Chalisa. 10h episode was aired today (India time). And we are just warming up. Dr Sunder is one of the best orators I know, with a fine sense of humour. Satsang are serious stuff, but he still share one or two lighter moments. He starts with chanting and ends with singing the entire Chalisa. In between he picks up a couple of lines and dives deep into it. He links not only yoga to the discussion, but spirituality too. Check out https://www.facebook.com/yogaman9/ S uccess Gyan ’s Suren kicked off his webinar’s with the guru, Sri M.Topic- Why every challenge is an opportunity! Sri M’s autobiography, “ Apprenticed to the Himalayan Masters ” is a personal favorite, and I have widely recommended spiritual journey https://www.facebook.com/successgyan/videos/571806607021582/ – One big take away for me was Sri M’s response to his morning routine . Even at his level, he sticks to a morning routine. A key success differentiator for all leaders. – The discussion on, ‘do we need a Guru’ was very enlightening. #Sadhguru With Sadhguru in Challenging Times, every evening 6 PM: Got this from another friend. Caught up with a few episodes. Sadhguru: Official YouTube Channel of Sadhguru Considered among India’s 50 most influential people, Sadhguru is a yogi, mystic…www.youtube.com Books : Started with a few. What impressed me was Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear. A share in one of our alumni group prompted to start with this book, even though it has been on my to-read list for some time. Brilliant book on “habits” Join in my journeys with books at GoodReads Books (disclosure: I am no voracious reader. I think too much knowledge is more dangerous than little knowledge!) I watched a few movies … We were clear not to watch anything that is linked to a virus-like story. We skipped ‘Parasite’, ‘Contagion’, ‘Virus’, etc Mohanlal’s ‘ Drishyam ’, the original. Gully boy — very inspiring story. Must watch. Good News, Bareily ke Barfi Yeh Zindagi , featuring SRK as a psychotherapist. Ee vaikunthapurramuloo – a superhit action masala film 🙂 ‘ Kumblangi Nights ‘, also a brilliant film. One serial I really enjoyed, ‘ Panchayat ‘ on amazon prime. It is a very different treatment, simple. Most importantly, a lot of self-reflection. Completed a lot of things on the work-front. How are you spending your time?
- Communication skills for leaders, coaches – a coaching approach
1. Listen – What to listen?: What the client (or coachee/team-member, depending on the context) is saying, not saying, beyond body language. Listen deeply, with empathy, unconditional positive regard, and if possible, with unconditional love. A mother’s love is closest to unconditional love. A great Guru demonstrates the same. Hence the mirror is a popular metaphor for active listening. No judgment, no opinion, no rush to offer a solution. Is it possible? This is a skill that can be learned. Not what we teach at BSchools as a communication skill, not what we train at corporates as a leadership skill. It is much deeper. 2. Ask – What to ask? It comes from what the client is saying (& not saying!). Picking up the thread is a great skill. After the client has finished talking. It also depends on what is the objective of the conversation, irrespective of the context, at work, or beyond. It should be a thought-provoking and creative approach, beyond the process. Hence it is powerful questioning . Powerful for the client, and a verb. 3. Tell– What to tell? What we observe. What you pick up as a potential dissonance. What you want to challenge, to nudge gently out of comfort zone… all for the benefit of the client. Subject to the trust and confidence already built into the relationship, and being nurtured. Not for the ego of the coach/leader/professional. Why? So that the client moves from the current state to a move resourceful state, as s/he defines it, at a pace that works for her/him. 4. Presence Not a dominating, overbearing presence. That is actually not “presence”, but absence. Pure presence is without ego, again for the client. Can we tap into that state of selflessness? 5. CreatingAwareness Holding mirror, listening deeply, powerful questioning… all with the object to facilitate the client to move towards his/her stated goals. Not mere transactional goals, but connected deeply with life goals, life purpose. Can it get more client-centric? Not just lip-service, but at all levels. The bad news is these are tough work for a leader, professional, or coach. Unless these are used, the impact will not be transformational for the client. The good news is these skills can be learned. it is also maximizing potential. It is most empowering for the client, very liberating for the leader, coach/professional. PS: These are at the core of our ICF coach training and certification programs for aspiring coaches, and the Regal Coach Certification (RCC) program for leaders, professionals. Weekend batches during the lockdown to maximize your potential. Check out https://regalunlimited.com/ #CoachTraining
- Your Checklist Before Hiring an Executive Coach
While there is no absolute way to find the right executive coach, here are some essential dos and don’ts. From executive coaching to leadership coaching to business coaching, these guidelines will serve you well in your search for the perfect coach. So here are five things to remember when you go ‘coach shopping.’ Checklist to choose the suitable Executive Coach 1) Understand your needs Before you begin your search, spend some time getting to know what you need help with and why. Once you are clear about your needs, it will be easier to select a coach. Clarifying your needs also helps to set clear objectives for your coaching engagement. Know that an executive coach can accelerate your growth and steer you on the right path only when you know what you want. “I remember when I started looking for a business coach, I wasn’t clear about exactly what I wanted help with. And as fate would have it, I never really did find a perfect fit in anyone”, confessed Sriram while talking about his early experience finding a coach. 2) Look for Executive Coach Certification Coaching is an unregulated industry where coaches are a dime a dozen. The last thing you’d want is an unqualified, untrained, self-styled coach tinkering with your life. So first look for their coaching certification. That’s the only way to weigh your coach’s credentials. Internationally acclaimed accreditations & certifications add so much more authority and credibility to your coach. Besides, it ensures accountability as you can escalate malpractice, if any, by your coach to the certifying institutions. 3) What is the coach’s professional experience? Like any job, relevant work experience is a must here too. Reach out to businesses in your network & get referrals. Also, check the coaches’ references. This not only gives you an idea about the coaches’ credibility & capability, but it also helps identify any congruency in a niche or specialty that might benefit you. For instance, if your business is in the hospitality field, a coach with expertise in dealing with the financial sector may not be suitable for you. Similarly, an executive coach with zero experience working with start-ups may not be relevant if you run a start-up. That said, be open to cross-over expertise too. An ICF coach worth their salt will be able to coach you regardless of whether they are familiar with your domain. That’s because the ICF coaching process is universally applicable. “As long as I was unclear about what I wanted, none of the coaches made sense. But once I sat down and made a list of the areas I needed help with, some of the coaches I had met earlier became good fits. Referrals from similar businesses helped me narrow the search for the right coach,” adds Sriram. 4) Ask the right questions A friend refers you to a coach she has worked with. She loves this coach. But is that a good enough reason to pick the same coach? Certainly not. What must you do then? Prepare a list of questions to ask any prospective coach you will meet while coach-hunting. To know what questions you should ask, this blog, Crucial Questions You Must Ask When Selecting an Executive Coach, will immensely help. As you ask the prospective coach your questions, converse with them about your needs, struggles, and dreams. Make mental notes of how you feel when you express yourself to them. Observe. Is the coach a good listener? Do you resonate with your coach’s responses? Finally, remember to ask them about their experiences & success stories. Have they coached leaders with profiles like yours? How many? They certainly aren’t right for you if their ‘best’ can’t convince you. 5) Dip your toes first So, you finally found a coach who seems like the perfect partner for your coaching journey. Well, don’t dive in headfirst. The prudent thing to do is dip your toes first. It’s good to be thorough in your research. Follow the prospective coach on social media. Find answers to the following pertinent questions that should crop up in your mind. What’s their persona like? Their ideas & outlook? Do you feel both of your values are aligned? Do they inspire you? Can you work with them? If the answers to these questions are encouraging, take your research to the next level. Attend some free workshops and webinars to gauge your coach further. Knowing them better will help you decide whether you can trust the coach. Remember, at the end of the day, a coach-coachee relationship is based on trust. So, if you can’t trust your coach, nothing else matters. “I tell everyone that a coach-coachee relationship is very crucial. So, look before you leap. Like any other relationship, weigh your options before you commit. And once you have committed, stick to it as your life depended on it. And, if you ask me, your life does depend on it”, counsels Shilpa, who credits her coach for the transformative life changes she underwent after finding the ‘perfect’ coach. Unlock Your Potential: The Power of Executive Coaching Coaching is a path-breaking, life-altering process. It is also a very personal and personalised journey. Therefore, what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. JC, a seasoned leader, shares that his first executive coaching experience did not go well, making him very cautious. Out of the three executive coaches he interacted with, he hit it off with only one. And that particular coaching engagement took his professional and personal life to another level. JC still keeps in touch with his executive coach. He feels grateful to have a caring, non-judgmental partner on his side, no matter what. So if you are looking for an executive coach for yourself or your leaders, be diligent and do your homework well. Your/your leaders’ well-being and your organization depend upon it. We wish you a fruitful & fulfilling Coach Hunt! Regal Unlimited’s Executive Coaching Program We have the best network of 20+ highly accomplished ICF-certified executive coaches & business coaches. - #ICFCoachOfTheWeek
#ICFCoachOfTheWeek We are thrilled that Subash CV – Founder of Regal Unlimited, Master Coach, and Trainer, was selected as #ICFCoachoftheWeek. ICF, or the International Coaching Foundation, is a premier global coaching and coach training institution. It is considered the gold standard in coaching. ICF selectively honors coaches who add excellence & value to the ICF coaching profession & community by recognizing them as the #ICF Coach of the Week. In 2018, ICF bestowed this honor on Subash. Let us get better acquainted with Subash through this narrative! Knowing the coach mentor with whom you will be choosing to undertake ICF Coaching Certification for 6+ months is critical. The Journey to Mastery in ICF Coaching Banking veteran to being lauded as #ICFCoachoftheWeek: Subash has come a long way from securing the fortunes of individuals & establishments to securing the futures of leaders & organizations through ICF coaching. Subash’s introduction to ICF coaching happened by accident. Or was it ordained? Subash now believes that coaching ‘comes’ to you when you start vibrating at a certain level of consciousness. So it’s never an accident! How it began After 21 years as a corporate executive in the banking sector, Subash decided to take the path less trodden and become an entrepreneur. As a first step, he enrolled in the executive education program at INSEAD, one of the top B schools in the world. And that’s where Subash discovered coaching; ICF coaching, to be more accurate. He found this process a transformational experience and intuitively knew that coaching would be his passion, purpose, and profession. It was love at first sight, or shall we say ‘first session’? Why ICF Coaching? Subash feels blessed to witness the unfolding and awakening of human potential. The thrill & joy he receives from beholding transformational shifts in the clients he serves is immeasurable. “Coaching gives me a life filled with purpose,” reveals Subash. Additionally, as a person comfortable working behind the scenes, a coach’s subtle, silent, yet catalytic role suits Subash to the T. Becoming a Coachpreneur Post INSEAD, Subash chose to become an ICF-credentialed Professional Certified Coach (PCC). With this ICF certification, he set up his own coaching practice. The support Subash received as an INSEAD alumnus and his experience coaching fellow INSEADites helped him build his coaching resume and confidence as an ICF coach. They were critical in his coaching journey. Quest for mastery Subash began his arduous quest for the coveted ICF certification, the Master Certified Coach (MCC) credential, in 2014. Becoming an MCC took five years, sincere, deep work, and the committed effort of clocking over 4000 coaching hours. ICF Coaching and coach training Subash has impacted the lives of more than 1,000 senior leaders in his ten years of coaching. The ICF coach training program he conducts has enabled over 350 coaches to receive their ICF certifications over the last eight years. Why become an ICF coach? Having experienced ICF coaching as a client and then as a coach, Subash believes it is one of the most robust and reliable coaching interventions. The scientific ICF coaching competencies and research-backed ICF coaching process, all supported by the ICF code of ethics, ensure authentic, results-based coaching. Subash’s reaction to being honored as the ICF Coach of the Week encapsulates the quality & spirit of the quintessential ICF coach. ‘To those whom much is given, much is expected.’ That is what this nomination means to me. - Important Things to Consider Before Hiring a Mentor Coach
Mentors are valuable assets and choosing the right mentor coach can be critical to your success. Personal and professional growth, greater confidence, profitability, more time, less stress, understanding your strengths, weaknesses etc are some of the benefits that you can achieve with the right mentoring. A mentor coach can give you support and inspirations to help shape your decisions and reach your goal. But before taking a plunge into a coaching relationship, it’s important to gain clarity about exactly what type of problem you are facing, is it related to your life, business, career… Ask yourself these questions… What goals do I want to achieve with the help of a mentor coach? Where am I now regarding the goal? Why do I believe a mentor coach will help me get there? Am I ready to put in the work needed to achieve my goals? If you are looking for a coach who can magically make your problems disappear and make you successful then you are not going to find the right mentor coach ever. You have to take responsibility and do all the work. A mentor coach will listen to you without any judgements, ask powerful questions and thus offer a fresh outlook to help you gain clarity. He/She will motivate you to take action and help you to keep going, will not let you get away with excuses and inactiveness but will hold you accountable and challenge you beyond your comfort zone. Also will partner with you in the process of achieving your professional or personal goal. Be ready for a long haul as changes don’t happen overnight. Are you ready for that? So when it comes to the process of choosing a mentor coach below mentioned are the few points that you should remember. Qualifications It’s important to consider what credentials the potential mentor coach has that are relevant to mentoring someone like you. You should also check if they are proficient in all competencies and have the proper knowledge and skills to understand your situation. Since coaching is not regulated, anyone can claim to be a qualified coach even without any professional training and certification. Achievements If you are going through the process of finding a mentor coach, evaluating the potential mentor coach’s career is a good starting point. Inquire as to whether they have accomplished the equivalent of comparative outcomes that you wish to accomplish. Lifestyle An outstanding coach is someone who is best in his / her field, can set an example hence provides true inspiration to others. Check if this coach has the life that you want, like the lifestyle, mindset, health, family, money etc. Confirm they walk their talk and their experience aligns with your goals. References and Testimonials Coaches use a variety of tools and styles which may or may not suit you. Hence it’s worth confirming this by talking to the mentor coach’s previous clients. Ask the mentor coach for references and do your due diligence. Most coaches would be happy to provide some reference for you to speak to. Make note of the testimonials, experiences and results of the clients. Trust A great coach-client relationship is built on trust. It is always good to have a demo or discovery coaching session with a prospective mentor coach and pay attention to your feelings during the session. See if you are comfortable enough to discuss your vulnerability with this mentor coach. Did this mentor coach challenge you, did he/ she ask the right questions to help you? Better still, as they explore with questions and actively listen, can they emote feelings you weren’t even aware you had? Rapport is critically important hence find someone you can relate to. Don’t go for a mentor coach who will not speak to you personally before committing, as there is no other way to determine your compatibility. Moral values and ethics Find someone who shares your moral values and ethics. Your prospective mentor coach may be successful but may not share similar moral values and ethics as you. Check if your values and ethics align, otherwise it may cause you a lot of stress and probably not achieve the outcome that you desire from the coaching relationship. Accessibility It is important when choosing a mentor coach to make sure the person has the time, interest and availability to devote to the mentoring relationship. Accessibility is an important element of mentoring. So look for someone who is willing to make time for you. Look for a mentor coach who is flexible in their availability hence is always there for you. Coaching Structure Find out the way the mentor coach is proposing to deliver the coaching service. Is it via video calls, in person or by telephone calls? and is there flexibility in terms of your preferences? How are the coaching sessions priced? Getting an answer to all this is important as it will have an impact on deciding whether the prospective mentor coach is right for you. Hire a mentor coach who is a lifelong learner and is someone who continuously levels up their expertise. But more than anything else, it’s very important that you are happy, healthy and mindful or you will not be able to grow to your full potential. Keeping this in mind it’s worth exploring the goals with a mentor coach who will support and inspire you to achieve your goals Are you ready to unlock your potential with the help of a mentor coach? - Why ICF Coach Training with Regal Unlimited? New online batch Oct 17
For over six years, having trained/mentored over 200 aspiring coaches, and over 1,000 leaders to coaching, we are setting new benchmarks in coach training for aspiring professional coaches, and leaders. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/we-6-years-young-coach-training-certification-subash-cv-mcc-icf-/ Why #RegalUnlimited? We are ICF approved, have trained over 200 coaches for various certifications, over the last 6 years, from across the globe (N America to Australia). Our focus is on coaching skills based on the ICF framework, leadership (personal & professional), loads of practice-sessions, and managing the business of coaching. The mentors are a group of professional coaches, PCC or MCC form ICF, on their second innings after successful corporate careers (including business leadership roles), and living their life purpose. All can not handle the rigor of the program. We help you become a great coach, and a successful professional coach. Then there are a few additional reasons that make us unique, and our alumni coaches move from #good2great: One of our focus areas have been a few (not a lot) #assignments that would help the learner-coaches to dive deep… this journey is first self-awareness, then certification. Learning is one of the key outcomes of any coaching engagement. We are external focussed, this journey helps us go within… One such assignment is a book review. We look at each learner-coach and then recommend a book to them. Usually, a book that will speak to them, based on where they are in life , at that point in time. We have been lucky to get over 90% right, with the choice of books. And we have taken the liberty to go into different areas to recommend a book. It includes coaching for performance, inner game, etc. (secret!!) Ted-like talk, presentation: The coach goes through the book, shares what s/he picked up from the book, and connect with coaching, as s/he sees it. A coaching connection is important. Some learner coaches have discovered life lessons from such experiences. One such book is “Biology of Belief” which has blown over some of them, and have discovered very valuable life lessons on health, science, spirituality, leadership, and coaching. Some of these truly challenge and break your biases, and beliefs also. A close look at the beliefs and values are also part of a coach’s journey… ICF Coach Training – a new batch starts on October 17, 2020 . Pre-work and registrations are open.
