What is the Coaching Style of Leadership?

Coaching style leadership is a way to provide guidance to the team from the leaders. It is done
to achieve high-standard work & enhance the skills and confidence of the team. Therefore, it is
very important to know about the coaching style of leadership. It helps the leader to decide
which style will work better for his/her business. There are 4 types of coaching styles of
leadership, they are:-

1. Directive coaching style– In directive situations, the coach needs to have deep levels of knowledge about the subject matter. For example, if you were coaching a team on behavior-driven development (BDD) you need an understanding of not only the theory but the practical knowledge of how to write and execute BDD tests. A directive coaching style refers to the approach in which the team members work as directed by the leaders. In fact, the leader will explain or direct the team about the plans and strategies of work to the team by their own experiences.

2. Non-directed coaching style- The basic approach of non-directive coaches’ works by helping the person or people they are coaching to discover and apply their personal experience to solve their problems. Alyssa Adkins, the author of Coaching Agile Teams, uses the phrase, “ask the team” which is reflective of non-directive coaching. This style is very popular in agile circles. Non- directive coaching style refers to the strategy of doing and learning. The leaders do not direct the team from their experience. They provide freedom to the team members to implement their ideas to solve problems.

3. Laissez-Faire coaching style- Leaders and supervisors will stand back and let their employees make decisions and may let them set their own deadlines. They don’t offer much feedback. The Laissez-faire coaching style refers to the leaders who will not be completely involved in the decision-making of the team. Besides, they will help their team but also give freedom to make plans and decisions to succeed in the business.

4. Situational coaching style– The situational coaching style is referred to the style adaptation according to the situation in their organization. The situational theory of leadership suggests that no single leadership style is best. Instead, it depends on which type of leadership and strategies are best-suited to the task.
